Program Description

About the ESL Program:

The International English Language Institute (IELI) was established in 1950 to provide students with outstanding English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction and orientation to life in the United States. IELI students increase their fluency, accuracy, and confidence in English while actively learning and developing the language study skills needed to succeed at American colleges or universities, to excel in their professional careers, or for their own personal enrichment. The IELI curriculum incorporates classroom instruction with multimedia and computer laboratory work, along with all of New York City’s cultural resources. Students can get discount tickets for special events at Hunter College. The IELI is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.

Highlights:

  • Students who complete the advanced level may apply for undergraduate admission to CUNY schools without the TOEFL.
  • Study among a cultural, ethnic, and racially diverse student body at one of the oldest public colleges in the U.S.
  • Experience living in New York City, a world-class city known as the capital of the world.
